From Banff RCMP:

Between June 21, 2018 and June 22, 2018 the Banff RCMP investigated a series of thefts of gasoline and other property from rural communities.

A series of thefts was reported at the Redearth Creek and Sunshine Village parking lots. Drivers returned to find holes drilled in their gas tanks, which were emptied. Metal gates and ski racks were also reported stolen from vehicles.

The investigation produced a description of a suspect vehicle and trailer used in the commission of the offences.

On June 23, 2018 the suspect vehicle and trailer were located in Canmore, Alberta by members of the Canmore RCMP. Further investigation by the Banff and Canmore RCMP led to the arrest of an offender and the recovery of stolen property.

27 year-old Brandon Wegner from Penhold, Alberta has been charged with:

Possession of Property Obtained by Crime exceeding $5,000,
Theft exceeding $5,000,
Possession of a Weapon for a Dangerous Purpose, and
Failure to Comply with Undertaking

The accused appeared before a Justice on June 23, 2018 and was released upon a Recognizance pending his next appearance in Canmore Provincial Court on July 25, 2018.

“Communication between law enforcement agencies is a key to the Crime Reduction strategy within the Bow Valley” says Staff Sergeant Michael Buxton-Carr, Banff Detachment Commander. “Timely intelligence-sharing allowed our patrol units to recover valuable property and to protect our rural communities against further harm.
