There's an added bounce in students steps at Beacon Hill Elementary as they head outside for recess these days.

Thanks to the hard work of local parents and community partners, students are playing on a brand new accessible playground at the K-6 school in Sylvan Lake, following a final inspection on the equipment last week.

Parent volunteer Marion Allred says she's still blown away by what became a real community project.

“Our whole community came together and raised the money for this in the 1st place; usually schools don’t get a playground for at least two years, it’s kind of unprecedented for us to get it after a year of being in the school, that’s pretty impressive, the community contributed to that playground for sure”.

Parents volunteered for the 7 day playground installation which helped save $50,000.

Their fundraising efforts brought in more than $40,000 to help make the playground a reality, and thanks to grant funding they now have some extra dollars they are using to plan for phase 2 of the playground.

Allred says the playground build was both a fun and challenging experience.

“A little crazy at times, a lot of us were just parents, most of us were mom’s and we just found the parts, did the best we could and built that playground”.
