Almost as old as the City itself, a congregation in Lacombe celebrated its 125th year of service on Saturday (Sept. 30).

Originally serving the Presbyterian community starting in 1892, the St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church was built in 1909 to accommodate the growing mass.

After merging with the Grace Methodist Church more than a decade later in 1922, the building was renamed to the St. Andrew’s United Church.

Not afraid of change, the church made a bold decision in 2011 when they officially became an affirming congregation.

Pastor for the last three years, Marco Ste.-Marie, said it’s something they continue to be proud of.

“We all know someone who’s from the LGBTQ community and we all have someone in our family that is. Many people here felt that these family members were excluded so that’s how it came about and it’s been celebrated ever since.”

Ste.-Marie said the church has meant so much to the community over the years and to be a part of its 125th birthday is extremely special.

“I see this also, as a very important milestone to celebrate all of those over the 125 years who have built this community. I look at all the ministers over here and basically harvesting the fruits of what they’ve sown and in 25 years from now, people harvesting the fruits of the seeds I’ve sown today.”

“It’s very important in that way.”

In 2014, St. Andrew’s United Church was the first building to be designated as a Municipal Heritage Resource by the City of Lacombe.
