Students spending the night at Hunting Hills High School in Red Deer as part of a 24 hour fundraising bike-a-thon event promoting mental health and well-being were sent home last night following an online threat.

The threat was made against the school on social media, Red Deer Public Schools says they take threats very seriously, and initially the bike-a-thon was placed in lockdown.

The event was cancelled a short time later and RCMP handled a controlled release of the roughly 500 students in the school.

Red Deer RCMP say the matter remains under investigation and Red Deer Public Schools says more information will be released today as it is made available.


From Red Deer RCMP at 10:50 pm- On November 7, 2017 at approximately 7:00 pm Red Deer RCMP were alerted to a lock down initiated by school officials at the Hunting Hills High School after a veiled online threat was posted on social media.

Officials then called police, who attended and cleared the school.

Police have not substantiated the threat at this time, and the matter remains under investigation.

There were approximately 500 students in the school at the time for a 24 hour Bike-a-Thon event.

To further ensure the safety of the participants, school officials elected to cancel the remainder of the event.


From Red Deer Public Schools at 10:30 pm- Following an on-line threat at Hunting Hills High School, the Bike-A-Thon event has been cancelled.

RCMP are on scene managing the situation with school staff.

A controlled release of students is currently taking place under the direction of Red Deer City RCMP.

Red Deer Public Schools thanks the support and excellent work of Hunting Hills staff and RCMP in managing this situation and keeping students safe.
