A member of the Sylvan Lake Detachment encountered a second unrelated vehicle westbound on Hwy 11a travelling across the centre line without headlights.

The RCMP member was able to avoid colliding with this vehicle and then proceeded to turned around to stop the westbound vehicle.

This vehicle failed to stop and a short time later, that vehicle left the road and collided with a power pole. The driver was ejected and was located nearby deceased.

The passenger was trapped inside the vehicle and had to be extricated by the Sylvan Lake Fire Department.  EMS attended and transported the passenger to the  Red Deer Regional Hospital with serious injuries.

Alcohol, speed and manner of driving are believed to be factors involved in this collision.
