After years of planning and construction, the wait is almost over for the opening of Sylvan Lake’s new recreational facility.

Media had the chance to tour the NexSource Centre Wednesday afternoon which includes two regulation sizes hockey rinks, a five-sheet curling rink and a swimming pool.

After the roof on the town’s old arena collapsed in 2014, the new facility became a priority.

Deputy Mayor of Sylvan Lake Graham Parsons said it’s been a long process and is glad to see it completed.

“We have been waiting for this for a long time. Yeah it was a devastating blow when it happened to the community, but it’s an outstanding facility. It’s everything that we dreamed of and more."

Director of Public Works Dave Brand said the community was essential in making the project happen.

“Fundraising, sponsorship support has been huge and really the support and understanding, just realizing that we needed to build this facility. There was a lot of construction hiccups, we had users in some of the existing facility as we were building it.”

“Everybody has been very patient and understanding and we are extremely excited to open this to the public.”

The facility also has multipurpose rooms, meeting rooms, an upper lounge, a children’s play space and a senior's centre.

Most of the facility will be open to the public on Friday, with the Grand Opening scheduled for May 12th to the 14th and will feature free admission throughout the weekend, a dueling pianos stage show and a family festival.

The cost of the project was just under $34 million.
