Tow trucks attended to roughly 11 vehicles in the median on the QE2 this morning (Feb 14th) following the multi-car pile-up shortly before 8:30.

It happened between the Highway 12 overpass and the rail overpass just south of Lacombe, near Fraserway RV.

EMS passing by were the first to come across the crash which resulted in 2 people being transported to hospital with minor injuries.

Lacombe Fire crews provided traffic control and helped divert southbound traffic onto Highway 12 into Lacombe.

Fire Chief Ed van Delden says road conditions were likely a contributing factor.

"the wind came up rather unexpected, it was kind of all of a sudden the front came in, and we had blowing snow.  Bridge decks are usually the first to ice up, visibility was poor in that area".

Northbound traffic was also reduced to one lane as emergency crews attended to the scene.

The QE2 was fully re-opened shortly after 10.

Update as of 10 am : Lacombe Fire crews are clearing the scene, traffic no longer being diverted.

The QE2 just south of Lacombe remains a parking lot following a multi-vehicle crash before 8:30 this morning.

Initial reports were of a 9 car pile-up, although further vehicles were invovled.

Lacombe Fire Department remains on the scene.

The crash happened near the railway overpass in the southbound lanes.

Southbound traffic is being re-routed at Highway 12 through Lacombe and over to Highwy 2A, as a result, just due to the added volume, it's also a slow go on 2A.

No reports of any serious injuries, but word EMS attended to a number of minor injuries.

Snow and blowing snow contributed to slick conditions.

Looking southbound from Highway 12, traffic is backed up as far as you can see.

More to come.
