The Hamlet of Mirror is in danger of losing their fire department, unless some more volunteers are found soon.

On Wednesday night, Lacombe County hosted a public meeting in Mirror to try and save the station, and  they are giving the Mirror department another month to try and get at least 7 additional volunteers to add to their 5 current members.

They have reportedly received only one application in the last 10 months.

County Fire Chief Drayton Bussiere says if those volunteers aren't found, residents of Mirror will notice some changes.

“The biggest effect on the community that they will see is insurance, to be totally honest. They are still going to have fire service coverage; it will just be coming from further away. So the distance from a fire hall is one of the things that insurance companies use to calculate those costs, so the community will notice that.”

Bussiere also says the lack of volunteers also makes training new ones much more difficult.

“One of the things we notice as a deficiency was training, and it’s difficult for 5 people to train. So the members that are still here travel to Alix to train so that there are more people. A few of the members that are still here are new, newer, so they’re training is limited and so that limits what they can do response wise as well.”

The Alix fire department has covered Mirror for almost two years now, and will continue to do so if the volunteers aren't found with a month, and the Mirror department folds.

Bussiere says insurance increases might be the biggest change Mirror residents notice. Response times should not be affected, as they already had to wait for the Alix department to assist with every call.
