For the last 18 months, Lacombe County and the Hamlet of Mirror have been trying to get more volunteers for the Mirror fire department, which is currently in danger of being dissolved if they don't get more interest.

Lacombe County Fire Chief Drayton Bussiere explains what they need in order for the station to function properly.

“So we’ve got 5 on the roster right now, we need to have a minimum of 12 members to really call that fire department viable. And it’s not really just 7 additional members, we need them to join and then commit to a pretty significant amount of training for the next year or so, just to get that training levels up to where we would like them to be.”

Bussiere says they will be discussing the department’s future at a public meeting later on this month, to talk about what will happen if they don't reach their goal of a minimum of 12 trained volunteers.

“We’ve been doing some advertising, and some word of mouth, and just really trying to get the message out there that the fire department really needs some volunteers, and so this public meeting on the 25th is kind of one more step towards saying, hey we really need people who are interested to step up, and if not there’s going to be some impacts to the community.”

Currently, the Alix fire department is helping to cover Mirror, and they will fully take over their responsibilities if more volunteers are not found soon.

The public meeting is on July 25th at the Mirror Community Hall.
