Lacombe's military history will be highlighted at an event coming up next weekend (Sept 30th), being held in conjunction with the Culture and Harvest Festival.

The City of Lacombe, Lacombe Historical Society and Lacombe Legion are teaming up to unveil a new exhibit, mark historic designation for the cenotaph and hold a candlelight vigil.

As Planner with the City of Lacombe Jennifer Kirchner explains, they'll host an opening reception for the brand new Reflections on Vimy exhibit by the Historical Society.

“We’ll be focusing kind of on the questions of what happened at Vimy, what does it mean and give kind of a glimpse of what Vimy Ridge has meant and continues to mean for the residents of Lacombe.  Of course Vimy Ridge was a very important battle during World War I”.

The cenotaph in Lest We Forget Park dates back to 1922 and there will also be a special ceremony to help recognize its significance according to Kirchner.

“We’ll be unveiling a plaque for the designation and people will have the opportunity to learn a little bit about the history of the cenotaph and how it was built”.

The cenotaph was erected in 1924 in honour of the Lacombe residents who gave their lives during the First World War.

The Lacombe Legion will close out the night with a candlelight vigil which will mimic ceremonies that take place in the Netherlands, to remember what our soldiers fought and died for.

The special military history night is set for September 30th from 6:30-8:30 at the LMC
