Four candidates have come forward for two seats as a Ward 5, Wolf Creek Public Schools trustee.

Here’s your chance to find out more about them before the 2017 Municipal Election on Oct.16.

Ryan Staal is the owner of CrossFit Lacombe.  He wants to focus on strengthening physical activity in the schools.

“Me being kind of a fitness guy, I just know how much physical activity helps people, not only with their health, but with their general well-being. I see how that can translate so easily into the school and how kids can benefit by getting that physical activity and exercise.”

Staal has a degree from the U of A in Physical Education and has spent the last three years as a Lacombe resident, after moving here from Stettler.

Theressa Franko is a Blackfalds resident.  Her decision to run came after speaking to some of the Town officials.

“It was at the insistence of our current mayor Melodie Stol. She called me and pleaded with me to please run, because the mayor and town council as well a lot of the residents in Blackfalds felt it was important to have someone from Blackfalds to speak up for Blackfalds.”

Franko is the former president of the Optimist Club in Blackfalds and volunteers with all three Blackfalds schools along with Big Brothers Big Sisters.

Retired teacher Brent Buchanan lives on Lacombe Lake.  He says his 26 years of teaching make him the man for the job.

“I raised six children and put them through the public school system as well, so I feel like I have lots of experience that I can bring to the table. I’m passionate about public education and always have been and I’m collaborative. I like to work with others and together we can work things out and come up with the best solutions.”

Buchanan spent his entire teaching career with Wolf Creek Public Schools where he also spent time as an Administrator.

Last, but not least is Lacombe resident Kelly Lowry.

Lowry served as a trustee on the board from 1999-2007 and said her past experience gives her a better understanding of the role.

“The trustee advocates for students and to keep the education dollars where it best affects them, where they can have the best learning opportunity. I believe you fund the children adequately to what they need to do, they will always do best.”

Lowry is the current office manager at Lacombe Dental.
