Construction on the main street project here in Lacombe is scheduled to be completed today, with vehicles once again being able to drive straight through downtown from highway 2-A to the QE2.

Engineering Services Manager Jordan Thompson explains what’s happening today (Friday, October 20th).

“The main street project is on time, and we are doing our final inspections today actually, and pending a successful inspection today we will be opening the road up by the end of the day today.”

Thompson says there is still a bit of cosmetic work to be done around downtown.

“You’ll notice Pidhereney’s (construction company) will still be on site installing some signage, and some street furniture so they’ll be some small things kind of on the sides of the road that will be ongoing for the next few weeks here.”

Thompson says the signs for the detour around the hospital should be removed by the end of the day.

Thompson is thanking downtown businesses, residents and visitors alike for their patience in this construction season, as Main Street was shut down to make sanitary main and water main replacements, and to upgrade both the walkability and flow of traffic through the downtown core.

The final step for the project is a top lift of paving and final line markings will complete the project, which is scheduled to start next spring.
