Despite a couple of rain days, the Main Street project in Lacombe continues to progress on schedule.

City Engineering Services Manager Jordan Thompson explains where crews are currently focusing their efforts.

“They’ve advanced into what we are calling stage 2, essentially 49C Avenue. The underground crews are replacing the water and sanitary main in 49C Avenue. We’ll be doing that for the next few weeks and then behind them, the concrete crew has mobilized into stage 1, which is the east most part of 50th Avenue, and they are presently constructing new curb and gutter and new sidewalks for the downtown”.

Once the underground crews finish up their work on 49C Avenue, they'll backfill their trench and move west into stage 3, with the concrete crews continuing to work west into stage 2.

Thompson says the first couple of stages of construction present the most challenges and inconveniences.

“Things are progressing fairly well. This is the most complicated part of the project with the most amounts of businesses, it’s the most complicated part in terms of ensuring pedestrian access is available to all of the businesses and certainly that is a priority for the crew to make sure is addressed on a daily basis”.

Stage 1 should then re-open to traffic in the middle of July with 49C Avenue also to open back up to traffic by the end of next month.

Crews remain on pace to have the Main Street project complete by the end of October.
