The streets will be filled tonight with ghosts, goblins, and ghouls going door to door to Trick or Treat.

As Halloween is always one of the busiest nights of the year, the Lacombe Police Service wants to remind drivers to slow down and keep an eye out for the excited kids out collecting candy.

Constable Jeff Hewitt says it's better to be safe than sorry, so slow down and treat every neighbourhood as a 30 zone.

“Halloween’s the one time of the year when there’s actually more pedestrians rather than drivers. A lot of little kids could be hyped up on sugar already, or just really excited about the night, so just watch out and be careful. There’s residential area’s everywhere here in town so most kids are going to be going through those neighbourhoods, so treat the whole City like a playground zone.”

As for keeping your kids safe, Hewitt says to add something bright or reflective to their costume so they're visible to drivers.

“Or the parents themselves if they’re out walking with their kids if they can wear something so the group can be seen. Just try and make sure their kids settle down a little bit, like I said they’re going to be excited. But if parents can make sure they’re running back and forth on the same side of the street that’s fine, but when they go to cross make sure they’re using crosswalks, looking both ways and crossing when it’s safe.”

Finally Hewitt says at the end of the night, parents should check their kid’s candy bags to make sure everything there is safe to eat.

“They’re going to get a lot of candy so anything that’s been opened already and not prepackaged just throw it out. We don’t know what happened, and it might be fine, but it’s not worth the risk so just toss it. I’ve heard cases before in the news of people finding things like razorblades in their candy so in that case you can call police, but if you find something that isn’t too suspicious just throw it out.”

Hewitt says he and the other officers will be out on patrol tonight, making sure everyone has a fun, and safe Halloween night.
