With plenty of growth in Central Alberta, local school divisions are hard at work setting their priorities for new schools and modernizations.

For the Chinook's Edge School Division they are working to manage significant growth in two communities, Carstairs and Penhold.

Top priority is expanding Carstairs Elementary School, with expansion of Jessie Duncan School in Penhold number two on their list according to Superintendent Kurt Sacher.

It’s a community Sacher says they are currently working to relieve space pressures in “we received 4 new relocatables to help us with the growth in Penhold and we will be adding them to Jessie Duncan School which will allow us to keep the Grade 1’s as they move into Grade 2 next year. So it will become a pre-K to Grade 2 school starting in the fall of next year and that relieves a lot of pressure off of Penhold Elementary which will then move to a 3-5 school. Long term in Penhold we need more support”.

The division's highest modernization priority is H.J. Cody High School in Sylvan Lake.

Red Deer Public School Board also addressed capital priorities this week, at the top of the list is a new Grade 6-8 school in north east Red Deer and the modernization of Glendale School.

Wolf Creek Public School Board will address their capital priorities at their next meeting on March 16th.
