If you're just using LinkedIn as a job board, you're missing out, said Wednesday morning's speaker at Social Media Breakfast Lacombe.

Jesse Cheetham works in HR for Peavey Industries. He's also GM of the Blackfalds Wranglers and a self-proclaimed LinkedIn "addict."

“If you go onto LinkedIn just to get a job, you’re not going to value out of it. It really is a place where you can share information, network -- it’s a big networking tool,” Cheetham said.

“I connect with people in similar roles and industry and I’ll reach out to them if I’m looking to launch something new in our business or with the hockey team. I’ll reach out and say ‘Hey, have you tried doing this’ and get some feedback from people. So it’s really helpful in that regard.”

Some of his advice:

  • Keep your profile open
  • Use tact when sharing your accomplishments
  • Curate your news feed with content that’s important to you by following business leaders you connect with
  • Post things that demonstrate what your brand is about and stick to it
  • Keep it professional -- unless it’s your business, avoid posting about politics and religion
