Bars and restaurants in Sylvan Lake won't see too many changes or new regulations heading into summer patio season under a new Licensed Food and Beverage Bylaw Town Council approved this week.

Town Administration worked with a business review panel which included a number of local business owners and the RCMP to take a closer look at liquor service regulations and live entertainment on patios after the Alberta Gaming and Liquor Commission announced it would no longer be regulating those areas.

Communications Officer Joanne Gaudet says the group felt not a lot of changes and regulations were needed.

“Other than it’s now regulated under the municipality as opposed to the province and Alberta Gaming and Liquor. We’re relying on our local businesses to sort of manage themselves appropriately and we look forward to seeing the outcome. We’re not making a whole lot of changes to those former regulations that allow liquor service on licensed patios until 2am with consumption until 3 am”.

In terms of live entertainment on patios, there are some provisions according to Gaudet.

“Permitted live entertainment on patios between 9am and 9pm Monday to Sunday all year, then we do make changes starting on June 1st until September 30th, we extend these hours to 11pm on Thursday, Friday, Saturday nights as well as any Sunday in which the following Monday is a statutory holiday”.

There are standardized fines for noise violations under the new bylaw.

Gaudet says they hope to see some good live entertainment along the lakeshore and in the community, keeping that family friendly environment, hopefully with not a lot of enforcement required.
