Lacombe Composite High School continues to find ways to thrive when it comes to teaching students the importance of agriculture and harvesting.

Students recently harvested their honey from their Bee-Wise project and produce from their garden.

Advisor of the EcoVision Club and teacher Steven Shultz said the projects have been so successful, they’re partnering up with a local restaurant.

“We’re producing more than the cafeteria needs and we’re also producing more than the staff needs, so this year a group of students decided to start a small micro business.”

“With the help of ECHO Lacombe (Association), they gave us an infusion grant to buy some labels for our honey, we officially created a partnership with Cilantro and Chive. We are now serving them honey on a weekly basis as well as some micro herbs.”

All of their work was on display at the school for their annual harvest celebration, where they invited elementary students, dignitaries and sponsors to take part.

Shultz has a lot of praise for the students and said he’s overwhelmed with the amount of work they’ve done and continue to do.

“Students get to raise a tropical plant of their choice, every year. This year they raised eight different varieties of potatoes. We also started a garlic garden this year, we harvested over a 100 kg of honey and the kids learned how to jam and make jelly.”

Shultz added they’re always looking for ways to be more involved in the community and continue to seek out guest speakers who’ll share there insights on agriculture.
