Results from the Community Speed Limit Survey in Lacombe are in.

Last night Lacombe City Council heard the feedback from roughly 500 motorists, cyclists and pedestrians who participated in the survey.

Mayor Steve Christie says in total, the public was invited to provide input on speed limits in 14 areas of the city.

“It’s always good to see what people are thinking and it’s good to compile that information. As we look forward in the future to doing a master traffic plan, which we have to in years to come, it will be great to incorporate that information and see what we can do,” Christie said.

The majority of respondents said residential speeds are reasonably set, but around 25% of motorists and pedestrians said they would like to see slower speeds on Woodland Dr. from Cranna Lake Dr. to 50 St.

51% of respondents also somewhat or strongly disagreed supporting an initiative to replace school and playground zones with a community safety zone.

A greater number of respondents indicated faster speeds are needed on three corridors, including 50 Ave. between 53 St. and Highway 2A, Highway 2A from 46 Ave. to Woodland Dr. and University Dr. from Collage Ave. to the Physical Education Centre.

Christie said in order to consider an increase, a speed limit assessment will be conducted in the next transportation master plan update.

“We don’t have any in house traffic engineers with regards to speed and in regards to impact on safety due to speeds. That is something we’d have to contract out and get consultants to look at those certain areas.”
