With almost a bill a day, it's been a busy session for the Alberta legislature and Ponoka-Lacombe MLA Ron Orr says the year has been one of great change.

Ron Orr held his Christmas Open House last week welcoming those in his riding to meet him, answer questions and express any grievances they have.

Orr says many in Alberta are unhappy and struggling to understand the rational of the current NDP government.

“I think it began with Bill 6 and the protests that were mounted there. It’s interesting that we’re still seeing significant protests arriving at the door of the legislature, in regards to some of the other issues put forward.”

He adds the Wildrose believes the government has brought forward many initiatives they didn't campaign on and are taking things beyond their mandate.

Orr explains that the top issue this year in Central Alberta and directly in his riding has been rural crime.

“I hear that almost weekly from people who call, who are frustrated and can’t get through on 911. They can’t get the police to come out when they’ve got criminals standing in their yard having driven in. They don’t know what to do and are afraid. It’s a complex issue because we’re talking about two levels of judicial court and we’re talking about three levels of government in funding and financing this. It’s a very difficult issue to resolve.”

Orr says Alberta is in a crime crisis as the crime severity index from the spring indicated we are the highest province in Canada when it comes to crime.

Looking forward Orr says in 2017 some of the issues that might be tackled include social action bills and the environment.
