The City of Lacombe is being honored once again for their public project skills, as the Lacombe Main Street Program picked up The American Public Works Association Alberta Chapter's 2018 Project of the Year in the $5 to $10 million category.

The award recognized excellence in construction, management, and administration of public works in Alberta.

Lacombe's Director of Planning and Operations Jordan Thompson says they put a big emphasize on minimizing the impact of construction on local businesses in the area.

“Whenever we’re doing any kind of construction, especially in the downtown area, there will be an impact to businesses’ and to residents and to tourist in Lacombe, so that cannot be ignored. But what we do to try and mitigate that impact is what partly what is being recognized here.”

Jordan Thompson says the Alberta Chapter of the APWA could nominate this project for a national award, which would put it in competition with public works projects across North America.

“We don’t set out to chase awards, like we don’ set projects or define what we do to chase awards, but we certainly want to make sure that the hard work of our team and our staff are recognized when in fact we do believe we are excelling in certain areas. “

This latest award comes about a week after Lacombe, alongside the Town of Blackfalds, Lacombe County, and the City of Red Deer, received the Alberta Urban Municipalities Associations Sustainability in Collaboration Award for their work on the regional wastewater line.

The award was presented on Wednesday, October 3rd, 2018 at the APWA's 2018 Excellence in Public Works Conference and Tradeshow at the Sheraton Hotel in Red Deer.
