The Lacombe and District Historical Society is gearing up for Rogers Hometown Hockey to take over Lacombe, by throwing it back to the early days of hockey in our city.

The Lacombe Rockets were part of the now defunct Central Alberta Hockey League, which played from 1956 to 1965, and were a major staple of the community at the time.

Executive Director with Lacombe Regional Tourism Marie Pèron says the Rockets were one of the best teams in Canada in their day.

“They actually were winners three years in a row in the 60’s, and were actually selected through a Canada wide competition to represent Canada on a European tour in 1964, so they traveled and played teams all across Europe.”

Pèron says the Rocket name came from the post WW2 era of new and exciting technologies and innovations, and Lacombe has a history of always staying up to date on the latest technology.

In honor of Rogers Hometown Hockey, the Historical Society is hoping to add to their hockey collection, something Pèron says is done to preserve our local history.

“We are hoping to get donations, or people who will come out and loan things so we are aware of what is in our community…as museums, people have the option to work with us as a donor, or to loan us items for temporary purposes like a speciality exhibit.”

They will also be looking back at the history of women’s hockey in Lacombe, as well as a tribute to the earliest recorded history of Lacombians slapping on some skates and hitting the pond.

If you have any vintage Lacombe hockey memorabilia, the Historical Society asks that you please get in contact with them, as they would love to catalogue and display them during Rogers Hometown hockey, which is on Feb 3rd and 4th.
