The Lacombe Fire Department is looking to expand its 37 person crew with its annual recruitment drive.

For the first year those interested must undergo a fitness test as part of the application process.

Deputy Fire Chief Drayton Bussiere said it's ok if someone doesn't have experience as all recruits undergo a three month level one basic firefighting course.

“That’s one of the biggest benefits of volunteer departments I think. We really get people with all different experiences and all in different stages of their lives. It really helps us provide better service when you have such a large dynamic.”

Bussiere added the commitment level can be quite high but Lacombe is a busy department for those looking to gain experience and pursue a career in firefighting.

“We always half-jokingly tell our members that we’ll take anything their willing to give us, so some are here quite a bit. We train three Monday’s a month and our crew changes are on Thursday, each crew comes on call once a month. There’s all of that plus calls as well as any extras.”

You have until January 15th to apply, for an application follow the link http://www.lacombe.ca/living/emergency-services/fire-services
