Dancers from Dancers Edge here in Lacombe are hopeful that they will make their debut in front of a national audience.

The Canada Winter Games opening ceremony dance auditions are on Saturday, September 29 at 10 a.m. at Red Deer College.

Officials are seeking volunteer performers aged 12 to 30 with a background in dance, that show energy and enthusiasm.

Heather Buelow owns Dancers Edge studio here in Lacombe and in Blackfalds and has been chosen to be a torchbearer for the games.

She said she wanted her students to be able to be a part in the event, so she pushed the of age students to tryout.

15-year-old Scotia Mackenzie is one that has accepted her dance teachers challenge, she is confident that her prior training will help her push for a spot.

“Were not the only studio in Central Alberta so I definitely believe that there will be a lot at this audition which kind of terrifies me but at the same time I am proud of my technique and I feel pretty confident.”

Mackenzie dances 4 nights a week in her first year of high school, she says this is an opportunity that she has been waiting for to challenge herself.

“I immediately jumped on the opportunity.”

She says she was looking for volunteer opportunities but with her dancing background this one was right up her alley.

“I feel like I pick things up very easily, but I am just excited for an opportunity to show that off.”

Buelow also wanted the young ones who aren’t able to audition to dance in the event too, so she has asked all of them to line the path where she will be carrying the torch.

The opening ceremony of the 2019 Canada Winter Games is on February 15.
