Lacombe City Council addressed a letter from a concerned resident last night in regards to provisions for garage sales in the city.

At the centre of the concern is a neighbouring property that seems to be having an ongoing garage sale.

Mayor Steve Christie says there are definitely communities that have some rules for garage sales.

“There are communities that look at garage sales that are ongoing for long periods of time or a cover up for a disorderly property that they just say oh we’re having a garage sale and it’s just a property that is in disorder”.

The concerned resident has pointed to a bylaw in the City of Edmonton which places a limit of 3 garage sales per calendar year at one location and for no longer than 3 consecutive days.

Holding garage sales longer under that bylaw would require a development permit and business license.

Christie explains how Council has decided to proceed.

“It’s not precedent setting. It’s something that has come up from a community member and we will do some research into and see if it applies to other aspects or if we have heard similar complaints within the city, if so I think we’ll deal with it that way, if not we’ll just keep an eye on it”.
