Division 1, the county's most southeastern jurisdiction encompassing Alix and Haynes, is one of them, where John Ireland is running against incumbent Rod McDermand.

Although he says McDermand has served the community well, Ireland is running on change. He believes organizations benefit from having new people come in and bring a fresh perspective.

At the county, he wants to bring that renewal.

"I think it's important to turn people over regardless of who they are and what they've done over the years," Ireland says.

"Any organization I've ever been involved with has benefitted from a turnover of directors or board directors. The county is no different. You need perhaps a different perspective on a problem from time to time. You might get a creative solution."

Improving communication between the county and residents is his main goal if elected.

"It's been adequate. That could be the one area where that could benefit from some change," he says.

Ireland moved to the county in 1982 and is a third-generation grain producer.

He and his wife Allison have two grown sons.

Over the years, he has participated in the community in several capacities.

He's volunteered on the Satinwood School Board and on the parent council. He has held various positions at the Knox Presbyterian Church including elder, board member and youth leader.

Ireland has coached sports, been a 4-H leader and served on the Haynes Community Society Board.

"It's a great area to live and people are tremendous," he says.

"I didn't really know what to expect when I went door-knocking but the response has been very positive. People have been very warm and engaging and supportive. It's great for a new candidate to have that kind of encouragement."
