New Year's resolutions are hard to maintain for some, especially when it comes to health and fitness.

But Lacombe personal trainer and owner of Force Nutrition, Mike Harvey says the key to healthy eating is whole foods not fad diets which are almost impossible to sustain long term.

Harvey says start with small changes and make SMART goals which stands for specific, measurable, attainable, realistic and timely.

"Break it down into small things that are attainable, not huge things, because those things can sound intimidating.  If I say I'm going to do 10,000 push ups next year that sounds like a lot, but then if I break it down and say I'm going to do 198 a week that doesn't sound too bad, maybe I can break it down to I'm going to do 28 a day, that sounds really realistic right."

Harvey adds there can be a lot of misinformation online as well and if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

"I've seen ads recently posted online from people offering diet programs claiming people have lost up to 18-20 pounds of fat in three weeks and that's physically impossible. You're setting people up for failure and false expectations."
