Sylvan Lake residents attended a meeting at the NexSource Center Tuesday night hosted by Habitat for Humanity Red Deer to help the company decide where next to build their unique, low-cost homes.

Though the company covers most of central Alberta, CEO of Habitat for Humanity Red Deer Karen Vavrek, used Lacombe as a reference for a very successful project execution.

"The city of Lacombe provided us an affordable housing grant and lots of support, which enabled us to build 4 duplexes in 3 years, housing 8 families."

Habitat for Humanity offers low-income families homes that require no monetary down payment and interest-free mortgage payments.

Instead of a down payment, they use a system that Vavrek calls, sweat equity.

"Families work right alongside us and our volunteers and donors, to build affordable the homes."

She said it is a good opportunity for the future homeowners to display their commitment to the process.

Habitat for Humanity is currently deciding between Sylvan Lake and Penhold for future development.

Anyone who missed the Sylvan Lake meeting can attend a second meeting in Penhold on June 26 at the Penhold library.
