A number of local charities want to get people thinking about the season of giving, and not just the giving of gifts, but of volunteer time as well.

Central AB Gives is a group of non-profit organizations across our area, and have come together since 2015 once a year to promote Giving Tuesday, which falls on the first Tuesday after American Thanksgiving.

Pam Snowden is the Executive Director of Volunteer Central, one of the groups involved in Central AB Gives, and she says Giving Tuesday is an antidote to things like Black Friday and Cyber Monday.

“It’s just a little reminder, that when we are opening our wallets, or when we are spending time doing holidays things, to think about all the causes and charities in our community that would benefit from that giving.”

Snowden, along with Red Deer Mayor Tara Veer, helped kick off the Giving Tuesday campaign this morning at the Family Services of Central Alberta office, which will take place this year on November 28th.

Habitat for Humanity Red Deer is one of those non-profits involved with Central AB Gives, and as Communications Coordinator and volunteer for Habitat for Humanity Red Deer Shannon Humphrey explains, Giving Tuesday is about more than just donating money.

“We do have donors who donate a lot of money, but we have a lot of build partners who donate materials, they donate to the build, they come out and do team builds with their entire time. Sometimes we have other not-for-profits come out at they do team builds.”

Some of the groups involved in Central AB Gives include Habit it for Humanity Red Deer, the Good Samaritan Society, and the Red Deer and District SPCA.
