Due to a recent outcry from the community in the form of complaint letters to City Council and posts on community Facebook pages, a provision was added to the nuisance bylaw in Lacombe last night, adding some regulations for residential garage sales.

Some of the provisions include garage sales to be conducted between the hours of 8am and 8pm, residents only being allowed to host a single garage sale for a maximum of three consecutive days, six days if two garage sales are combined, and no more than a total of 6 garage sales in a calendar year.

Corporate Services Director for the City of Lacombe, Michael Minchin says the amendments were made due to complaints from the community about a current ongoing garage sale, and it will be a complaint basis in terms of enforcement.

"A lot of this relies on complaints from neighbours, and quite frankly a lot of the reason for the bylaw amendments itself tonight are as a result of neighbour complaints. So, as I said we are not looking to regulate garage sales in general, this is looking at those that create a nuisance, and that's why it's in the actual nuisance bylaw".

Other provisions include ensuring the property displayed remains in a tidy and orderly condition, and not allowing personal property to be left at a garage sale under a consignment basis, meaning you are not allowed to pay someone to sell your items for you at their garage sale.
