The Federal Minister of Sport and Persons with Disabilities announced over $11 million dollars Friday for the 2019 Canada Winter Games in Red Deer.

It includes $3 million dollars in capital project funding for enhancements to Great Chief Park, which will host long track speed skating during the Games.

2019 Canada Winter Games Board Chair Lyn Radford says it's an exciting announcement that will help ensure the Games deliver a life-shaping experience for all participants.

“We are grateful to receive this funding and are proud to be partners with all levels of government to further the Canada Games movement by building champions and inspiring dreams amongst youth across our nation. In addition, this contribution to Great Chief Park will leave an exciting four season legacy in our community for Red Deerians to enjoy.”

With this latest announcement the federal government now joins the provincial government and City of Red Deer as a funding partner in the games; the province and City have also provided over 11 million dollars in funding which accounts for over 75%of the Games approximate $44 million dollar total budget.

The remaining funds will be raised through sponsorship, ticket sales and merchandise.
