Red Deerians got the chance to learn a little more about genealogy research Saturday morning.

The Church of Jesus-Christ of Latter-day Saints hosted their Family History Fair which offered information sessions and ways to strengthen family ties through genealogy.

Long-time member of the Alberta Genealogy Society Peter Darby talked about how important genealogy is when it comes to strengthening families.

“It touches our hearts to learn experiences and the struggles of our ancestors. It makes us stronger as we face our own troubles and trials today, to know that others have gone before us and they succeeded in perhaps more difficult circumstances than us.”

“It builds a special bond and strengthens our families.”

Darby also talked about how the internet has opened many more avenues for research, but said people still need to be aware of what's true or not.

"It has also opened up questions of credibility and reliability of information. I think we’re in a post-truth world today in many ways and family history genealogy is not absent from that.”

“We have to search carefully and sift through information.”

Darby has studied genealogy for decades and is a past president of Alberta Genealogy Society.
