Storytelling, crafts and barbeque highlighted Saturday’s festivities at the historic Fort Normandeau in Red Deer.

Kids of all ages headed down to the water to help celebrate all the great bodies of water Canada has to offer.

Red Deer River Watershed Alliance presented “Splash – Love Letters To Our Waters”, where kids were encouraged to write about a body of water, whether it’s their favorite fishing pond or beach.

Nick Burnett took his two sons out for the day and said it was a great reason to get his boys outdoors.

“I definitely appreciate it because I grew up on a lake in BC so I just wrote about mine when I was a little kid.”

“Now seeing the boys being able to spend some time outdoors and enjoy the lakes and rivers as well is great.”

Aimée Zaph brought her daughter to the event and said it was an important message for her daughter to learn at a young age.

“It’s good for them to learn about water and what’s going on and our environment and how important and precious it is.”

SPLASH also celebrated Canada’s 150th and was co-hosted by the Waskasoo Environmental Education Society and the City of Red Deer.

The event was funded through the Community Fund for Canada’s 150th, a collaboration between the Red Deer and District Community Foundation and the Government of Canada.

Nick Burnett and his wife Suzanne brought their kids out to the historic Fort Normandeau to celebrate their favourite Canadian body of water as part of Canada’s 150th.
