In response to an increase in crime in the Eckville area, the Town of Eckville and Lacombe County have teamed up to host a Community Crime Prevention Information Fair tonight (Jan 25th).

As Lacombe County Councillor Dana Kreil explains, the goal is to bring the community together to be proactive.

“Police can’t be everywhere, so we need to do our best as property owners to prevent crime on our property and work with our neighbours to watch out for each other.  Ultimately community watching out for community, so being aware and in contact with your neighbours to know what’s normal and what’s not normal and having everybody watch out for each other”.

Sylvan Lake RCMP and a Lacombe County Peace Officer will be on hand, as well the fair includes a tradeshow according to Kreil.

“Security companies, a gate company, Rural Crime Watch, Victim Services, and we hope that people will learn about ways to discourage crime on their property with low tech things such as steering wheel clubs and hitch locks to higher tech things such as driveway alarms and security systems”.

Kreil is also a member of the Benalto & Area Rural Crime Watch which she says is a very healthy and active group; they will have memberships available at the fair.

The Community Crime Prevention Information Fair runs from 7-9pm at the Eckville Community Centre.
