Residents with dementia at the Royal Oak Village in Lacombe can go for a walk or enjoy some fresh air on their own, thanks to a newly-constructed outdoor courtyard.

It's a project that was spearheaded by the home's family council and last night, Christenson Communities held a donor recognition reception to thank those who helped out.

“There’s been such tremendous community support, so many donors. We’re so grateful to everybody who’s contributed, all kinds of groups and businesses and families so it’s really been a labour of love,” said Fran Kimmel, who chairs the council.

Access to the outdoors can be limited for those who live at the Memory Care Cottage due to the risk of wandering.

The outdoor courtyard at Royal Oak gives residents with dementia a place to get some fresh air in a safe setting.

The courtyard features green space, benches, a birdhouse and some ornaments.

“Being outdoors, doing things outside, getting sun on your face, getting fresh air is good for folks. It can help with feelings of loneliness. It’s good for wellbeing,” Kimmel said.

“We want the very best for our loved ones. It’s a great for families to come and visit. It has been a project driven by families and so we remain actively involved in planting flowers, keeping the gardens up and all the things that come with having an outdoor space.”
