Despite the poor weather conditions, the community is coming out in bunches today to celebrate the grand re-opening of Discovery Canyon.

The outdoor waterpark was shut down last year for renovations and upgrades to the stream bed, wider and more accessible walkways, better beach access and mechanical work on the water supply system.

All part of the Canada 150 Legacy Project, Recreation Superintendent with the City of Red Deer Barb McKee says it’s an exciting day.

“Today’s wonderful. We’re up against some fairly blustery weather, but still had a great turnout from the community and I think that just signals how much people love this facility.”

“It’s free and affordable to the community and just a great place to come and let kids unplug and get back to nature.”

Mayor Tara Veer says it’s a great addition to the City’s park system.

“We have a national award-winning park system. Our park system is obviously our crown jewel of Red Deer, Red Deerians often sight that as their favourite part about Red Deer and it’s important to continue to maintain our parks, to modernize them, as the case here, and expand the parks system.”

The City is also under development for a new nature themed playground which will be installed on site sometime by the fall along with a new art piece which was created by Voyager Art and Tile.
