Open and honest communication is two of the best strategies when talking to your kids about social media in order to prevent them from falling victim to scams or predators.

But what if you could stop harmful material over the internet from ever entering your house?

Darrell Christensen from Done Right Technology Solutions in Lacombe says Cisco, the largest networking company in the world, has software that enables you to control the exact content that comes into your home via the internet.

He says it can be utilized with any internet provider.

“Shaw or Telus or Xplornet, whoever you get your internet from, we log into the router or the homeowner does, and we make very minor changes to it, all transparent. Right away all that traffic is now going through Cisco directly before it gets back to you.”

He says this technology will also inform parents if someone is trying to access restricted material.

“It will also send them an email notification if there is a breach of those parameters. So if someone is trying to access a site, or download content that Cisco has blocked, the Cisco umbrella has blocked, you can receive this on a daily notification type of thing.”

The software is already available through your internet provider; you just need to have some technical knowhow in order to set it up.
