Over 300 volunteers will be hitting the streets of Red Deer tonight, to talk to people experiencing homelessness.

The Point in Time homeless count will go from 9 to 11 tonight, as Red Deerians try to get some more detailed information on the homeless, like demographic, and key issues they’re facing.

Roxana Stewart with the City says the count is all part of their 5 year plan to end homelessness.

“We analyze the numbers and we see if there’s any particular demographics within the numbers that perhaps aren’t being served appropriately or efficiently or in the best way. Then we can make changes to fix those problems.”

Roxana Stewart says numbers may be different this year as they conduct their third count, but need to be looked at in the bigger picture of things.

“We need to remember that this is just a snapshot of just the one night. But it’s important not to just look at the numbers standing alone by themselves, but to consider the context of the community and the economic conditions we’re facing.”

Stewart says along with the 300 people, 25 organizations have stepped forward to offer their help.
