The holiday season usually means holiday parties, family gatherings, dinners, and other opportunities to get together and enjoy a few adult beverages.

This time of year also means check stop season, with the Lacombe Police Service doing a check stop blitz today.

Constable Ruben Geleynse says if you've had a few drinks, your best bet is to completely avoid your driver’s seat, as you can get a DUI without the vehicle even moving.

“Even just sitting in a vehicle behind the wheel, you can be charged with care and control of that vehicle, it carries the same consequences as impaired driving…if you’re in position of the keys behind the wheel, absolutely.”

With social media, often times check stop locations can be shared, something Geleynse has mixed feelings on.

On one hand, he worries that drunk drivers can use social media to avoid certain check stops, but he also thinks that others will avoid drunk driving if they know the police are out.

Either way, he says it's very difficult for users to stay on top of police locations.

“Typically at these check-stops we’ll roam throughout the night so it’ll be numerous locations throughout the night, so it’ll be rare that people can stay on top of all the different locations we target.”

The check stops will be roaming throughout town tonight and this weekend, and the LPS will continue having regular check stops and traffic enforcement all through the holiday season.
