Heritage Resources Committee can now move forward with the designation of the Lacombe Cenotaph.

Council approved the motion last night, meaning they can start working on its plaque and a celebration ceremony to highlight the site, which they plan to hold in late September during the Culture and Harvest Festival.

Planner with the City of Lacombe Jennifer Kirchner says it will be a great learning experience for everyone.

“We’ll be inviting all of the public to come out, learn about our military history in Lacombe and really take a good look at the cenotaph. Those types of monuments are rather beautiful with their interesting art work.”

“It’s something that really makes you humble about how small you are when it comes to world events.”

Kirchner says it’s important for communities to have these types of memorials to honour those who have made sacrifices.

“With the cenotaph in particular, these types of monuments are living. They will be changed and altered as need be to represent all the people that need to be commemorated.”

Lacombe Cenotaph was placed in Lest We Forget Park in 1924 to honour citizens of Lacombe who gave their lives in the Great War.

Moving forward, the intent for the Cenotaph is to continue to be an evolving war memorial with names being added as required.
