Central Alberta Pride Society is reaching out to the public, in hopes of raising funds for Pride Week.

A GoFundMe page has been created by the group to help with some of their fundraising goals including two rainbow crosswalks to be installed at Ross Street and Gaetz.

City of Red Deer has already approved the two sidewalks and the cost of paint and supplies have been donated by Fargey’s Decorating Centre.

The group needs about $2,500 to cover the labour costs.

It’s the second straight year the crosswalks will be painted and after they were vandalized last year, Chair of the Central Alberta Pride Society Serge Gingras said although it may happen again, it’s nothing to be concerned about.

“I don’t worry about it, although I am realistic that it might happen again. Our experience last year told us that, yeah, there were people who did it because they don’t agree with Pride Week, but there is also people who do it because they see paint on the pavement and they want to damage it.”

Gingras said he believes the community will come through and is getting excited about the whole event.

“We’re very excited about pride week and we’re hoping people respond to our activities in the same fashion and even more as they did last year. We had a very good experience last year and we are hoping for a repeat of a positive experience this year.”

Pride Week begins on August 13.
