The first week of May marks Education Week here in Alberta, where students and the general public should take time out of their busy lives to thank anyone who has helped them along their learning journey.

It would be a fitting tribute to our educations, as the theme for this year is 'Learning is a Journey', which is designed to highlight the role education plays in preparing students to pursue their careers in a diverse economy, while also ensuring they have some fun in school while learning.

Assistant Superintendant with People Services for the Wolf Creek Public Schools Corrine Thorsteinson explains why 'Learning is a Journey' was chosen as this year’s theme.

"It's a pretty fitting theme when we think about our schooling system and education from pre-kindergarten all the way to grade 12, it really is a journey when we think about students entering into our school system at a very young age in pre-k or kindergarten, and all the learning and growth and development that occurs in those years all the way until they finish their k to 12 schooling in grade 12. There are a lot of things that happen, and a lot of learning and growth that happens, and there are lot of people, a lot of professionals, who are really part of that learning journey."

Thorsteinson says everyone from the teachers, to the teacher’s aides, to principals, councillors, and janitors, all play a significant role in education, and should all be recognized this week.

The Wolf Creek School Board of Trustees and the ATA Local #3 has co-sponsored two scholarships in the pre-kindergarten program known as the ‘Bright Futures’ play academy, which is in a number of communities within Wolf Creek.

Thorsteinson says this is important because the learning process begins when a child is born, and it’s important to give them encouragement and scholarship programs at an early age.
