The Town of Blackfalds is into stage 2 of their Community Placemaking Initiative (CPI), which is their master plan to add signage to make it easier for tourist and locals alike to navigate around town.

Created back in 2015, the CPI goal is to increase signage around Blackfalds, guiding tourists and locals alike to various amenities in town.

Blackfalds CAO Myron Thompson says not only do these new signs help with directions, they also help form a more complete picture of the town.

“And that even includes highway signage…so it helps us kind of form and identify for the community, and carry that through the wayfinding signage and other interpretive methods to kind of provide some insight to people what Blackfalds is all about.”

Thompson says the vehicle wayfinding is phase 2 of this plan, and includes new signs in and just outside of town.

“Primary signs, or legend signs, are the largest signs as you come into the community, indicating a number of core amenities like Civic Centre, police station, library, downtown, those types of things. So it shows an icon for those, and then the secondary signs are the wayfinding signs and are positioned within the community to direct people to those amenities they are looking for.”

Phase 2 signage is expected to start being installed in early spring of 2019.

The entire CPI will take about 5-6 years to complete.
