To honour excellence in first-year teachers, the Board of Trustees has selected Meghan Huizing from St. Gregory the Great Catholic School in Blackfalds as a Division finalist for the Alberta School Boards Association (ASBA) 2021 Edwin Parr Award.

“Meghan is very deserving of this award, as her enthusiasm to see her Grade 8 and 9 students succeed in a safe and caring environment is astounding. Meghan speaks with her students in a calming and respectful manner and puts their needs at the forefront of every decision and conversation. Each day, Meghan does a phenomenal job modelling what positive and healthy relationships look like through her interactions with students and staff. As a result, she is able to permeate her faith into her lessons regularly and inherently,” said Vice Principal, Josh Keith at St. Gregory the Great Catholic School.

Huizing was one of four teachers nominated for this award from across the division. The three nominees were Caileigh Sheppard from École Camille J. Lerouge School, Katherine Monaghan from Maryview School and Kelsie Caine from St. Francis of Assisi Middle School. “Red Deer Catholic Regional Schools is grateful for all of our outstanding first year teachers. The children and young people in our schools are the direct beneficiaries of their commitment to Catholic education. Inspired by Christ, all of the talented and caring nominees are changing the lives of our students,” said Board Chair, Kim Pasula at Red Deer Catholic Regional Schools.

“Meghan Huizing exemplifies her faith in all that she does for her students and her school. Faith permeation is at the forefront of this young educator’s effective and passionate teaching and it is an honour to present her as our finalist in the Alberta School Boards’ Association Edwin Parr News Release Teaching Award,” said Trustee and ASBA Zone 4 Representative, Cynthia Leyson at Red Deer Catholic Regional Schools.
