A mural will be erected behind the Wadey Centre in Blackfalds.

Town Council decided on the location last night, after previously approving $15,000 to participate in the Canada Mosaic Mural project, which endeavors to complete 150 murals across the country showcasing cultural and geographical diversity.

Mayor Richard Poole explains why Council felt it was a good location.

“The Wadey Centre is combining with Denise Nielsen Memorial Park, which is going to be built, that’s in memory of one our extremely active community members, that’s going to be right behind the Wadey Centre.  We decided to put it there because it’s going to allow access, visible access to the majority of the citizens of Blackfalds”.

There was some concern about opting for an outdoor mural, but Poole says they are looking at some safeguards.

“Murals have been traditionally outside in a lot of communities across Alberta, so this isn’t unusual.  There will be some UV protection, there will be other things that will be put on there to keep it safe and we’re going to be looking at the possibility of maybe plexiglass or something else being included, but that has not come back to Council yet”.

Local elementary school students, the public and an artist will combine to paint 600 tiles.

The Town intends to put 3 options out to the public to vote on through social media channels to help decide on the mural design.
