A couple from Gibsons, B.C. is out to prove that you can go on a road trip and leave only footprints.

Barb Hetherington and Buddy Boyd are driving from Victoria, B.C. to Quidi Vidi, N.L. in a fully-electric Chevrolet Bolt, pledging to make a low impact on the environment along the way.

The two stopped at Peavey Industries in Red Deer for a charge this morning.

“With Canada being 150, we really need to think about the future and sustainability. And it’s about regular people making better choices,” Hetherington said.

“We’d like to show that it’s possible. Even on a road trip, you can have a low-impact.”

Hetherington said they’re also composting and bringing reusable food vessels in an effort to produce no waste on their trip.

Their two-month-long journey is called Bolt Across Canada and has already featured stops in Chilliwack, Merritt, Kamloops, Golden and Calgary.

Hetherington, a proponent of electric vehicles, acknowledged they’re passing through oil country, but said at some point, a shift to renewables will be needed.

“We also know that oil is not a renewable resource and there’s going to come a time when that’s not here. Also, you’ve got lots of sun. There’s the possibility for solar energy,” she said.
