A unique sport that combines Canada's favourite game and a swimming pool is holding their registration night tonight (September 27th).

Underwater hockey has been played at Burman University for the past 6 years, with their team, The Sharks, being made up of boys and girls from 8 to 19 years of age.

President of Underwater Hockey Club Lacombe Tracy Reeleder says the game is like a smaller version of hockey, except it's played at the bottom of a pool.

“You have to really work as a team to alternate taking turns getting down to the bottom of the pool. Because if everybody from your team came up for air at the same time, obviously you guys would lose the puck. You have to alternate, take turns, getting down and pushing that puck across the pool.”

Reeleder says age doesn't play as big of a factor in skill level, because it's based more on your ability to swim.

“Our requirements are you have to be able to swim 2-3 lengths of the pool. That kind of depends because they use snorkels, and they are diving down to the deep water, they have to be able to hold their breath for a little bit of a time.”

Registration is tonight at the Burman university Fitness Centre from 6 until 8 pm.

The Sharks team is open to anyone 8 years of age or older, and you should be able to swim a few lengths of the pool in order to be able to play.
