Red Deer Rebels are heading to a Game 7 after losing to the Lethbridge Hurricanes Sunday night.

With the 4-1 loss, the Rebels failed to finish off the Hurricanes despite being up 3-1 in the series.

If anybody expected the Rebels to feel down after Sunday’s loss, Rebels Head Coach and GM Brent Sutter was quick to remind everyone that not many people believed his team had any chance.

“Everyone of you guys standing here, you guys didn’t have us in this situation. You guys thought the Lethbridge Hurricanes were going to beat the Red Deer Rebels 4-0 because they had 20-some more points in the standings,” said Sutter.

“At the start of the series if you said we got to play a Game 7 against this team in their home building, we would take it.”

After dominating the Hurricanes in shots at 15 to 8 for the first 19 minutes of the first period, Rebels forward Michael Spacek was finally able to beat Hurricanes goalie Stuart Skinner to open the scoring with just 55 seconds left in the frame.

Things continued to go well for the Rebels until the 14-minute mark of the second period when forward Ryan Vandervils scored the Hurricanes first goal of the game, tying it one apiece.

“For 30 minutes, we played well.  After that they got that first goal and we just started getting on our heels a little bit and we started making some mistakes. They’re a good team and they capitalized on our mistakes,” said Sutter.

Just three minutes later, the Hurricanes took a 2-1 lead heading into the final frame on a goal from forward Alec Baer.

From there, the Hurricanes never looked back adding to their lead early in the third period on a goal from captain Tyler Wong while forward Jadon Joseph added an empty netter.

After receiving a five-minute major for a head shot on Hurricanes Tanner Nagel, it’s unclear if Rebels assistant captain Evan Polei will be suspended for the final game of the series.

In or out, Sutter said anything can happen in a Game 7.

“Going into Game 7 will be a great experience and lets just see what happens. You never know and they’ll (Hurricanes) be ready and so will we.”

The series finale takes place in Lethbridge Tuesday night.
