The Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) Curling season has concluded, and RDC is pleased to announce that Lacombe's Marla Sherrer of the Women’s Curling team has received the prestigious honour of being named the 2016-17 ACAC Female Curler of the Year.

As skip for RDC Women’s Curling, Sherrer led her team to a tie for second at this year’s Regionals.

At the 2016-17 ACAC Curling Championships, the team finished first in the round robin and then won their first playoff game before earning silver.

Sherrer’s leadership as skip was an important part of the team’s strength throughout the season.

“Marla has done a great job helping the team adjust to having two new players this year, and they’ve had a strong season,” says Brad Hamilton, Curling Head Coach.

The third year Occupational Therapist & Physiotherapist Assistant student-athlete is from Lacombe, and she has a strong history of competitive junior curling.

Sherrer transitioned into the skip position when she started playing at RDC, and she has continually expanded her skills in this role.

“Marla does a great job with the strategy part of the game and has worked hard to become confident throwing the last two rocks,” Hamilton says.

“She is quite competitive and is always trying to improve herself and the team.”

“Marla is a great representative for RDC Curling, and it’s very positive to see her recognized for her performance this season,” says Diane St-Denis, Athletic Director.

“Her calibre of play – in just her third year – demonstrates how curlers are improving in our program and the quality of our program is also improving from year to year. It’s great to see our student-athletes have success within the ACAC, and this motivates them to strive for continued growth and success in the future.”
