The Red Deer College Queen’s curling team are national champions.

With a 7-6 victory over the Concordia Thunder on Saturday in Camrose, the Queen’s came home Saturday with a gold medal.

After a slow start to the tournament, the Queen’s finished strong earning the unexpected result.

“We won five in a row to win it all. After losing the first few and to come back and win was pretty exciting,” said team skip Marla Sherrer.

Sherrer, who’s in her final year, said she is extremely proud of the year her team has had and especially grateful to see them all step up when it mattered the most.

“The girls really stepped up this weekend and curled really well. We got off to a bit of a slow start, but when it mattered the really played well.”

Sherrer, a native of Lacombe, is in her final year with the college and said her experience there is something she will never forget.

“It’s been so much fun getting to know so many people and making friends. RDC is just really fun, they have a good team dynamic and really good coaches.”

“It was a great three years.”

The Kings curling team also medaled, earning bronze with a 10-3 win over the Humber Hawks.
